Magazine research

In Dans lesson we had looked at many types of music magazine such as Smash Hits, Empire,Rwd and Kerrang . We also looked other types of magazines such as Ok, Hello, Cosmopolitan Girl and vogue. As a class discussion we looked at an example  music album cover called Hip Hop. We had looked at what audience its aimed at which are males from a urban and a mix .We looked at how its set out "Uk Stand Tall" which emphasises with the unity of Uk Hip hop. The image on the front cover has been edited on a pavement which suggest a urban environment.  So the audience of this CD might be aimed at young teenages who are into hip hop music.  As a group had looked at a cover of a music magazine called Mojo . We had discussed the terminology of the use of the magazine cover such as masthead, banner, graphic, main cover line and many others. The magazine that we had looked at was mainly aimed at middle age men who are still into that kind of music.

Magazine research

Today in Dans lesson we looked at music magazines. We focussed on cover terminology and audience appeal. At first we were shown a front cover of the music magazine called "Hip-Hop connections" .We then as a class went thorough all the conventions that made this magazine cover appealing to its specified audience, for example we identified that the main cover image involving six "ghetto" looking men, the men looking the way that did and he gestures they were pulling told us that the audience were from an Urban culture. We were then put in groups and were given a magazine front cover and were told to analyse it. We identified the masthead, cover lines, graphics, the mode of address and many other features. it was these features that old us that we were looking at a magazine for perhaps the male sex of ages somewhere inbertween 30-40. The colour, layout and font also told me this; It was very broad and not very detailed.

Magazine research!

Today in Dans lesson, we looked at music magazines. Specifically, we focused on the different genres of magazines first. For example, celebrity gossip magazines, music magazines, fashion magazines and many more. Then after doing a spider diagram of the different types of magazines there are, and some examples, we thought off the different reasons for the production of these magazines, and came to the conclusion that not only are they to inform the reader with some sort of information/entertainment, it is mainly about making money. Through the cover price and advertising, we found out that they are made for the money obviously, and also they exist to deliver consumers to advertisers. Next, we moved on to just focus on music magazines. We also looked at the cover terminology, after looking at 'HipHop Connection Analysis', and what the cover of this music magazine could tell us. We looked at the construction of it, and generally everything that was on the front cover, from the cover lines, to poses in the main cover image, etc. Also, we made sure we understood what part of the front cover was what. Like, the masthead, for example. This was used with an example of the front cover of the magazine 'Music'. Furthermore, we looked at in groups, a front over  of a different music magazine. Our group had the magazine cover for 'MOJO', and we made detailed notes about the front cover and all of the things that was on show. We identified the genre, masthead, banner, graphic, main cover image, cover lines, barcode, mode of address and also the target audience we thought this magazine was for. We decided this magazine was probably aimed at middle aged/older males. We then attempted to make some conclusions about these readers too.
