Magazine research!

Today in Dans lesson, we looked at music magazines. Specifically, we focused on the different genres of magazines first. For example, celebrity gossip magazines, music magazines, fashion magazines and many more. Then after doing a spider diagram of the different types of magazines there are, and some examples, we thought off the different reasons for the production of these magazines, and came to the conclusion that not only are they to inform the reader with some sort of information/entertainment, it is mainly about making money. Through the cover price and advertising, we found out that they are made for the money obviously, and also they exist to deliver consumers to advertisers. Next, we moved on to just focus on music magazines. We also looked at the cover terminology, after looking at 'HipHop Connection Analysis', and what the cover of this music magazine could tell us. We looked at the construction of it, and generally everything that was on the front cover, from the cover lines, to poses in the main cover image, etc. Also, we made sure we understood what part of the front cover was what. Like, the masthead, for example. This was used with an example of the front cover of the magazine 'Music'. Furthermore, we looked at in groups, a front over  of a different music magazine. Our group had the magazine cover for 'MOJO', and we made detailed notes about the front cover and all of the things that was on show. We identified the genre, masthead, banner, graphic, main cover image, cover lines, barcode, mode of address and also the target audience we thought this magazine was for. We decided this magazine was probably aimed at middle aged/older males. We then attempted to make some conclusions about these readers too.
