Evaluation

The task set was to produce two music genre magazine covers, for an AS Media Studies Project which was to be completed over a four week period. My fellow students within my media class and I were divided into groups of four. The students within each group were those that you would be working alongside until the completion of the project.
The group that I had originally been allocated to had previously decided that the genre of music magazine they would produce was going to be a RNB/HIP HOP magazine. Although I was not completely sold on this idea, as I would have rather be designing and creating a magazine cover for a more specific audience. In addition to this I do not agree with some of the representations that are portrayed through some RNB/Hip Hop magazines, therefore it seemed most appropriate for me to work on a different genre of music and join a different group.
The title of the music magazine that I helped to graft in my new group is called 'Infinity Rockz'. With this magazine my colleagues and I were making a deliberate attempt to attract a niche audience, INDIE music lovers.
One of the reasons that we chose to design an INDIE music magazine cover was that we wanted to be very specific in terms of the audience we were catering for. I believe that the 'unique selling point' (USP) of our group magazine is that the genre is INDIE.From my knowledge of INDIE music, I know that it appeals to a near niche, and specified proportion of individuals. Not to mention that there is only a select portion of magazines that cater for INDIE music lovers. Whereas a music genre like for instance POP is readily available in most shops.
I believe that 'Infinity Rockz' could be percieved as representing a social group, however when producing our magazine we took into consideration the stereotpes and prejudices that could be associated through some of the visuals e.g. ethnicity, gender etc.

We chose to address our audience with by using images that could be identified with INDIE music.
If I were to have the chance to re do this task I would ensure that the pre production stages of this magazine were thorough. For instance costume that were more suited or idnetifiable with some of the stereotypes often associated with INDIE lovers. I would have also added more text as I think that the cover lacks content that have given a better indication of the genre magazine.
The type of media institution that would be most likely to distribute 'INFINITY ROCKZ' would be a music store for instance HMV, Zanga, Virgin etc. I think these retailer are most likely to stock our magazine as INDIE music lovers are also likely toshop in theses stores. Funky retail stores or perhaps a high street stores such as Topshop and H&M.
From the process of constructing this magazine I now know that the media use a variety of tools and effects to require a specific image and to better it. I also learnt that this can be a long and daunting process especially when trying to complete this to a deadline. In addition to this to meet industry standards there is a lot of labour that must go into the production of the magazine, right from the pre production, product and t the post production stages of creating a magazine.
